An Australian TikToker has been left red faced after interviewing director Baz Luhrmann on the street without knowing who he was.
Georgia Godworth was filming a video of streets of Newtown in Sydney when she came across a man in a green jacket.
Ms Godworth began asking the man some questions about relationships, oblivious as to who she was speaking to.
Turns out that man was award-winning director Baz Luhrmann.
She captioned the clip, which was posted to TikTok, “no idea this was Baz Luhrmann”.
Something that should have clued her in was the fact that Luhrmann gave the person behind the camera tips as to where they should film for better lighting.
Mr Luhrmann seemed to take it all on the chin and enjoyed the unorthodox interview, giving some nuggets of wisdom and insight into his own approach to marriage with his wife, Oscar-winning costume and production designer Catherine Martin.
The pair have worked together on all of Luhrmann’s movies.
“During that journey of marriage, the person I’m married to and I found our own really genuine and authentic concept of what our contract to each other should be,” Mr Luhrmann said.
“But I think more importantly, marriage is not so much about what exists between you and another person, it’s about advertising to other people that you love and care as to what the dealio is.
“My own general philosophy is, if you care about someone and they’re your friend, but they fall in love with someone else or they like someone, there has to be some degree of acceptance.”
At the end of the interview, Mr Luhrmann told Ms Godworth that he usually doesn’t “do interviews”.
“But you know what? Happy to be a part of yours,” he said.
It must have dawned on Ms Godworth later just who she had spoken to as she captioned the video “guys I had no idea this was Baz Luhrmann”.
However, this didn’t stop people dragging her online for her ignorance.
“I feel like you shouldn’t work in media if you don’t know who Baz Luhrmann is. An insult to this genius,” one person wrote.
“Please tell me you’re joking and you absolutely knew who this was,” wrote another.
“This is really embarrassing for you. How do you not know him or his legendary wife Catherine Martin?” another commented
“This is such a wild encounter,” another wrote.
Some came to her defence and even found the situation humorous.
“Walking down the street and bumping into Baz Luhrmann is so Australian,” one person commented.
“This is SUCH a wild encounter! IT’S BAZ!!” another wrote.
“Girl, you’re lucky to interview the great Baz Luhrmann.”
