AUSTRALIA’s Race Discrimination Commissioner has condemned an ugly racist slur made by a Sydney beauty on tomorrow night’s episode of reality show MKR.
In the episode of the cooking contest, Vietnamese “supermums” Kim and Suong cook for the group. Before the meal, Sydney contestant Jess tells to the camera, “We’re definitely hoping there’s no domestic pets on the menu tonight”.
Race Discrimination Commissioner Dr Tim Soutphommasane says comments like this were outdated and unacceptable in modern Australia.
“Racist jokes may once have been acceptable, but they are not today,” he said.
“We must not give any encouragement to racism.
“If we tolerate casual racism there is the danger it can quickly rise to more calculated forms. Giving license to low level prejudice enables more severe discrimination.”
Cam Nguyen, founder and CEO of the Australian Vietnamese Women’s Association, said she was surprised to hear that the comment came from a young person.
“You don’t hear comments like that any more,” she said. “Maybe 20 years ago.”
“That the lady made a remark about serving pet meat is either a bad joke or a plain stupid and an outrageous misconception.”
Victorian mums Kim and Suong told teams their Secret Lantern-themed home restaurant “represents how we celebrate our new year, our lives, our culture. It’s all about fun.”
The episode also features a dinner party argument that Channel 7 is billing as “the biggest fight in MKR history”, between Sydney sisters Emma and Jess, and Victorian friends Roula and Rachael, which ends with one of the contestants storming out of the dinner party.
