Sassy Cinderella fable Midnight: The Fairytale Begins is searching for three future stars to play a pivotal character in the musical.

Producers are casting for the role of Stella, who is aged between 10 and 14, and filled with curiosity and feisty energy.

“This is a brilliant opportunity for professional performers, as well as those who might have

always secretly dreamed of the bright lights of the stage,” producer Spencer McLaren said.

“We are extremely keen to get applicants from all sorts of diverse backgrounds.”

The Melbourne-made musical, with tunes by John Foreman and Anthony Costanzo, stars stage favourites Lucy Durack, Verity Hunt-Ballard, Thomas McGuane and Matt Lee.

It is based on the classic fairytale, but casts the leading lady “Ella” as a strong woman who isn’t afraid to speak her mind, and challenge tradition.

Durack met with young hopefuls at St Kilda’s National Theatre this week.

“I was not good auditions when I was young,” Durack said.

“I auditioned for The Sound Of Music when I was nine years old, and got cut in the first round.

“I admire anyone who has the confidence to have a go. It’s no mean feat.”

Auditions must be submitted to midnightmusical.com.au by February 8.

Durack said Midnight was a big Broadway-style musical.

Co-star Hunt-Ballard has described it as “not tapping into that fairytale prince-saves-the-day”.

“It’s female empowerment,” she said.

“In bygone days, fairytales said you need a prince to save you. This is certainly not that.”

Midnight opens at the Comedy Theatre in June. Tickets are now on sale.
