NRL great Mark ‘MG’ Geyer has landed a new radio gig, two months after he was brutally axed from Triple M Sydney.

Geyer has signed a three year deal with 2GB radio in Sydney, and will be heard on the station’s new drive program which is hosted by Clinton Maynard.

The ex-Panthers star will also feature weekly on 2GB’s Continuous Call Team and Wide World of Sports programs.

“I’m going to be a bit of a drifter there, jumping into different shows and doing different stuff,” he told news.com.au about his new role. “I suppose I’ll be like a utility player coming off the bench in footy.”

Geyer said that he jumped at the chance to join 2GB when they approached him late last year.

“Radio is my happy place,” he told news.com.au. “I’ve been doing radio longer than I played first grade footy!”

The new deal is a coup for Geyer, who was axed from the Triple M Sydney breakfast show in November last year, which he co-hosted alongside Mick Molloy.

Geyer told news.com.au he was let go because there was no room for him on the station’s new breakfast show which is hosted by Beau Ryan, Natarsha Belling and Aaron Woods, and because Triple M had no other decent offers for him.

“They couldn’t guarantee what else they could give me as far as NRL went,” Geyer added. “They might have given me a game here or there, but there was no concrete offer.

“At first I was upset ... but that’s life. I’ve got no ill feelings towards them. They’re going in one direction and I wasn’t a part of that.”

Still, Triple M listeners were shocked by Geyer’s axing last year, given he’d been a part of the station for 17 years.

Mick Molloy, who is now hosting a breakfast show on Triple M Melbourne, addressed Geyer’s departure on-air late last year.

“You’ll be aware that MG is not coming back next year and this is very sad for me,” he said.

“I’ve really wanted to talk about his situation, but it’s not right because he hasn’t spoken about it himself, and out of respect for MG, I think it’s his story to tell and he needs to get that out and people need to hear it too.

“What I can say is this, I love the bloke. I have absolutely thoroughly enjoyed doing the show with him for two years, to coming in to work with him for two years.

“He makes me laugh. He’s one of the most unique men I’ve ever met in my life … I can’t tell you how much I love him and I really hope we can maintain our friendship for many years to come,” Molloy said.

Speaking to news.com.au on Wednesday, Geyer confirmed that he’s still good mates with Molloy.

“Over Christmas he sent me a few texts messages with photos of him on the drink, and I sent him a few back. I keep in touch with Mick ... and I hope he goes well in Melbourne.”
