US chart-topper Lizzo has paid tribute to the Australian spirit and response to the bushfire crisis.
“When I saw how you guys, you Aussies band together, the way you volunteer together, the way you care together, you have truly shown me what self love is all about,” Lizzo said at an invite-only show for Fox FM in St Kilda on Monday night.
Lizzo, whose Forum Theatre show last week sold out in three minutes, said she felt vexed about touring during a national disaster.
“When I first came here, I felt so bad,” she said. “I said, ‘I gotta go uplift the people, I gotta go put a smile on their face.’ But y’all put a smile on my face. Y’all helped me, y’all lifted me up.”
Lizzo, born Melissa Jefferson, performed her hits Good As Hell, Juice, Truth Hurts, Cuz I Love You and Boys at the radio station gig.
“I want to send some love to the fire fighters right now, and all the volunteers,” she said during the intro to Good As Hell, while warning the crowd: “Keep clapping b----!”
She also repeated her serenade to Melbourne as her favourite city.
“Melbourne (is my) new hometown,” Lizzo said. “I could really, really live here
I’ve been through a lot of cities, but Melbourne ... I was like, ‘Honey, I’m home!’
“Now I’ve just got to find someone to marry so I can have dual citizenship.”
But a Lizzo show wouldn’t be complete without positivity and empowerment vibes, and she didn’t disappoint, sharing a mantra of self-belief and self-love.
