Kylie Minogue makes UK chart history with new album Disco, scores seventh Australian No.1

Kylie Minogue has made chart history in the UK with her new album Disco and has overtaken some of music’s biggest names.

Kylie Minogue has become the first female artist to top the UK chart over five consecutive decades.

Minogue’s new album Disco entered the British chart at No.1, becoming her eighth UK chart topper since her debut Kylie in 1988.

The singer previously told News Corp it would be “phenomenal” if she could achieve the new record.

“I’m lost for words, thank you to everyone who has supported this album it means the world to me,” Minogue told the UK’s Official Charts Company.

Disco has also become Minogue’s seventh Australian No.1, no other local female artist has had more ARIA chart topping albums.

The album had the highest first-week sales on the ARIA album chart this year, in front of artists including Bruce Springsteen, Ariana Grande and Midnight Oil.

Disco also saw Minogue achieve the highest first-week sales in the UK this year, selling more than 55,000 copies, beating the figures set by Lady Gaga’s Chromatica.

More than 13,500 copies of Disco were sold on vinyl and about 4000 on cassette in the UK.

Minogue’s boyfriend Paul Solomons posted his support of the achievement on Instagram — the singer recorded much of Disco during lockdown at the London home she shares with her partner.

With eight UK No.1 albums Minogue now jumps ahead of Elton John, Cliff Richard and George Michael in the all-time league of acts with most British chart topping albums.

In the UK Minogue had been racing girl band Little Mix, who entered at No.2 with their album Confetti.

Mushroom Group chairman Michael Gudinski called Minogue to celebrate her chart feat.

“Kylie signed to Mushroom when she was 18 and I couldn’t be prouder to be part of

her continuing success,” Gudinski said. “It is a testament to what an incredible artist Kylie is. Her passion and work ethic to make this album through COVID shows her commitment. As Kylie herself said to me, “It’s hard yakka but I’m so committed to this, and I miss Australia.”

Minogue’s Disco is available on many formats, including blue, black and turquoise vinyl while her own website was selling Disco on the latest retro format to return, cassette.

Minogue’s first Australian No.1 album was Light Years in 2000.

Her British No.1s were Kylie (1988), Enjoy Yourself (1989), Greatest Hits (1992), Fever (2001), Aphrodite (2010), Golden (2018), Step Back in Time (2019) and now Disco.
