Kyle Sandilands goes rogue on-air during radio segment

It’s not unlike Kyle Sandilands to shake up the radio schedule, but his reason for going off script during today’s show might surprise you.

Kyle Sandilands went off script during his show’s daily game segment, demanding producers “stop the music” as he took matters into his own hands.

The Kyle and Jackie O Show co-host had his heartstrings tugged by a listener’s story of struggle during the show’s $10,000 Pop Quiz segment Wednesday, which sees the participant earn $100 for every question they get correct, with $10,000 up for grabs if all 10 questions are answered right.

Today’s caller, 23-year-old Rhiannon, was emotional from the outset, with a goal of winning the cash to buy a car for her parents after her dad was recently let go from his job.

Unfortunately, Rhiannon only managed to make $200. That was, until Sandilands stepped in with a better offer.

“Turn the music off. Forget the double or nothing. If you [Rhiannon] answer the next question right, I myself will personally buy your parents a car,” Sandilands said.

“It’s no 458 Ferrari or any of this. It’s just a car. OK, I will buy it personally for him.”

Rhiannon went on to answer the question correctly, with her father Craig sitting by her side to hear the good news.

“I will buy your mother and father a car, just because that’s what I’m like,” Sandilands told her, before talking directly to Craig.

“I’m going to buy you guys a car. Just to ease the pain of the s**t that’s going on,” he continued.

An emotional Craig urged Sandilands he “didn’t have to” do it, adding, “There’s a hell of a lot more people out there that are struggling more than what we are.”

But Sandilands assured him, “That’s all right. Listen, she played the game, she won. I’ll buy the car. That’s it. Nice to meet you, Craig.”

Sandilands and his co-host Jackie ‘O’ Henderson are two of the highest paid personalities in Australian showbiz, recently inking a 10-year deal worth a combined $200 million, which also saw their show expand into Melbourne.

It sees the powerful duo earning $10 million each per year, which is double their previous salary of around $5 million per year, minus bonuses.

If you break that down further, Sandilands and Henderson earn roughly $35,000 for a single show.

But their expansion to Melbourne hasn’t quite gone to plan, with the latest round of radio ratings released Tuesday showing KIIS Network has lost listeners in the city since the duo took over the breakfast slot from Jason Hawkins and Lauren Phillips.

The show’s audience share dropped to 5.2 per cent, down from 6.1 per cent in the previous survey, which was released in August.

They also lost 71,000 listeners since the last survey, and are now the sixth highest rated FM breakfast show in Melbourne.
