Joe Jonas is ecstatic about fiancee Sophie Turner and returning to Australia to judge on The Voice

JOE Jonas is flying high since leaving his band of brothers, with new outfit DNCE kicking goals, an impending wedding to a Game of Thrones star and now, coaching on The Voice in Australia.

JOE Jonas is in a happy place. The 28-year-old music star is all smiles after his recent engagement to Game Of Thrones’ Sansa Stark, UK actor Sophie Turner.

Jonas, who is best known as one third of the chart-topping Jonas Brothers, is shining professionally as well.

Jonas’s band DNCE scored big with debut single Cake By the Ocean and recently released new song Dance. Add his new gig as a coach on The Voice in Australia into the mix and there is plenty to celebrate.

Jonas started dating 22-year-old Turner in 2016 and the pair became engaged in October last year. Past flames had included Taylor Swift, Camilla Belle and Demi Lovato.

“I am very happy obviously,” Jonas says. “Everybody at some point in their life … you just know (who is right for you).

“I don’t plan on changing too much in my life. She (Turner) is working too. We have this mutual respect of each other’s busy schedules. We have an understanding that this is the time in our lives, when we are still young, to take full advantage of our careers.”

Jonas was a mentor on US version of The Voice last year and says it was a no-brainer to join Boy George, Delta Goodrem and Kelly Rowland for this year’s season of The Voice in Australia.

“What won me over was Australia, to be honest,” Jonas says.

“I’ve been here a bunch of times. I used to come here on vacation. Then I toured here two years ago. I think it could be a second home.”

Jonas comes to The Voice with plenty of pedigree. The Jonas Brothers — Joe, older brother Kevin and younger brother Nick — went double platinum in America with their self-titled second album.

Third album A Little Bit Longer and follow-up Lines, Vines and Trying Times debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard charts.

The Jonas Brothers hit big on television with Camp Rock and reality show Jonas Brothers: Living the Dream. Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience is one of the highest grossing concert movies of all time.

But by 2013 the band had splintered. A proposed fifth album, V, was scrapped. A tour was cancelled.

“When I was with my brothers for years and we decided to stop, it felt like the rug had been pulled from underneath me,” Jonas says. “I didn’t know where I was. I took time to figure it out.”

One thing Jonas didn’t want to do was revisit the sort of music he did on 2011 solo album Fastlife. Jonas wanted to go in a funk direction, but his record label insisted that he try to ape Justin Timberlake.

“One of the things I would tell my younger self is to be confident enough to know what sort of music to do,” Jonas says.

“When I did the solo thing there were a lot of people telling me the vibe I should go for and the music sound, and I knew all along but I just didn’t have the guts to take a leap of faith and try it.

“There were a lot of cooks in the kitchen and I didn’t express myself as an artist. I felt like I lived years of that sex symbol thing and I thought ‘I love rock and funk music and being surrounded by great musicians so I’m going to call my buddies and see if they want to do it’ and it worked out (with DNCE).”

Jonas plans to pass those lessons on to his team during The Voice.

“I am the new guy but I’ve been lucky enough to work with so many different artists — everyone from Rod Stewart to Nicki Minaj,” Jonas says.

“I bring experience to The Voice that the contestant

may not realise — producing, songwriting as well as doing it young and growing into it as an adult and then starting a new career.

“I’ve also worked with artists that aren’t necessarily my genre. My dad was a country singer and I grew up singing gospel in church so there are a lot of things I bring to the table.”

Jonas says he is still close to Nick, who famously dated Goodrem for 10 months before splitting in February 2012.

“Me and my younger brother are really close. He came out here (to Australia) for a week to visit and that was really fun.

“I’m really comfortable performing on stage but being on The Voice is different. When you sit in that chair and hear those voices and you hit that button and somebody else does too, you have to pitch really hard.

“That is the major thing I didn’t expect — it is a selling battle and you will do whatever it takes. You will name drop. It gets really competitive.”

To take time to have fun and smell the roses is another thing Jonas has learnt the hard way.

“Another thing I’d tell my younger self is to stop and enjoy life a bit more,” Jonas says.

“If I can pass my knowledge on to the next superstar, I will feel pretty good.”
