A host of stars celebrated Verry Elleegant’s emotional Melbourne Cup win, with co-owner Brae Sokolski hosting a shout of the bar upwards of $100,000 at an exclusive winners party.
Some of the well heeled revellers at city hotspot Society, were the restaurant and bar’s owner Chris Lucas and fiance Sarah Lew, Wayne Carey, Ricky and Rianna Ponting, Kris Smith, Campbell Brown, Nick and Rachel Holland, James Brayshaw, Steve Hooker, Mark Allen and Richmond footballers Trent Cotchin, Dion Prestia, Nathan Broad, Jack Graham and Jayden Short who are good friends with another owner John O’Neil.
The who’s who of Melbourne crowd had Dom Perignon on tap as Sokolski and his fellow owners including Ozzie Kheir, lapped up the famous victory with close friends. Sokolski celebrated with a group of best mates including Adam Coff, Ben Klein and Danny Weisy, with people describing the party as “epic”.
Sokolski and jockey James McDonald were captured singing Daryl Braithwaite’s hit song The Horses while standing on the bar and the festivities continued into the early hours of Wednesday morning.
“It’s a goosebumps feeling,’’ McDonald said.
Sokolski spoke to the crowd with passion about the day which marked the comeback for Melbourne, and even managed to sledge Premier Daniel Andrews.
“My city was decimated and desecrated by someone who doesn’t deserve to govern,’’ he was captured saying by Channel 7.
After the win on Tuesday Sokolski declared himself “the luckiest human on the planet” for winning the race he had watched since he was a 15 year-old with dreams of one day backing the Cup winner.
“...these moments are once-in-a-lifetime moments. This is as high as you can climb.”
