Guy Sebastian has revealed the rebooted Australian Idol approached him to join the show.
However Sebastian, whose career was launched by winning the inaugural Australian Idol in 2003, politely declined.
“I had a conversation about it, but I shut it down fairly quickly,” Sebastian told News Corp.
“I’m not involved at all. I’d still love to do something with Idol, I owe so much to it, it’s where I came from, but I just can’t be one of those people who hop from TV show to TV show. If I did anything I’d maybe do the Voice again.”
Post Idol, Sebastian’s TV career includes judging on Channel 7’s X Factor from 2010 to 2016 and ABC reality show Don’t Stop the Music in 2017.
He joined The Voice in 2019 and hasn’t ruled out following the show when it moves to Channel 7 next year.
“I haven’t had a discussion about it in ages, I think they’re still locking it all in. I love the show, I think Channel 7 will do a good job of it, I think it’s the same production team, I’m sure they’ll retain the essence of the show.”
However Sebastian doubled down on being unhappy with his own role on this year’s season of The Voice, which was criticised for creating drama over music.
“It didn’t sit well with me how I behaved on the show. I can’t sit here and blame the show, whatever environment I was in it didn’t bring out the best in me so that’s why if I do the show again I’m really making sure whoever they lock in I’ll slot into that mix. I want to be able to be myself and be a good representation of who I want to be. You find yourself getting sucked into a role you know the panel needs.
“I felt it got a little lost in this last season. With Kelly (Rowland) and (Boy) George overseas a lot of weight fell on Delta (Goodrem) and myself to carry a lot of the show. In my opinion it crossed that line of having a balance of drama where we’re all having a laugh to where it wasn’t feel-good. It was just drama and arguments. But they might not even want me in the end for the new series, who knows?”
