Married At First Sight fan favourite Lucinda Light has questioned why anyone looking for love would go on the reality show.
“It doesn’t uplift me,’’ Light said. “Everyone puts their head on a chopping block, otherwise if you just want love you’d go on Tinder. You’d have to be mad to go on a show like that.
“Why would you do it to yourself? It started maybe with wholesome ridgy didge stuff but it’s changed and it can make or break lives, it really can.”
Light, the counsellor, marriage celebrant, public speaker and MC, admits she had a dual motive for her appearance — to find love and promote herself.
But her wisdom and emotional intelligence as the voice of reason endeared her to viewers and won her a worldwide audience.
“I’m still dying to meet that person of my life and I fell into that fantasy they would hook me up,’’ she said. “I also did have ulterior motives to get eyes on my celebrant business so guilty as charged.
“But it did surprise me how many people resonated with me. I didn’t get the husband I hoped for but so much more came out of it.”
Light added: “It is unscripted but there’s so much manipulation and if you get a rough edit or you’re bullied, you might not be able to work. You really do sign up for Russian roulette that is MAFS. It’s a very intricate window and I want people to know what they’re getting into before signing their life away … but if you can use it in a positive way it is an adventure of a lifetime.”
Light is now empowering people to live authentically and navigate life’s challenges with grace.
Her novel, Shine Your Light, a guided journal for deepening your emotional intelligence, is out on April 2 via HarperCollins.
“It’s been a huge project with lots of love,’’ Light said. “I’ve been conjuring in my head and my heart for the past three months, working 12 hours a day.
“I’ve got a beautiful community and I’ve got a platform. I’m so grateful for it and it’s been quite unexpected.
“I’m just so excited for people to get their hands on this book. It’s not coming from a guru place. Here is where I’ve tripped and fallen and triumphed — a little bit autobiographical and a beautiful nurturing balm for people.”
