Fans of Matthew Perry are sharing throwback footage of Jennifer Aniston and Courteney Cox talking about their beloved co-star.
Video of Aniston’s 2004 interview with Diane Sawyer, in which she broke down while talking about Perry’s drug and alcohol addiction, has gone viral on social media after the actor’s tragic death.
Aniston shed tears as she told Sawyer she and her castmates were “not equipped” to deal with the issue.
Perry himself told Sawyer last year how Aniston had always stayed in close contact with him through the ups and downs of his addiction struggles.
“She was the one that reached out the most. You know, I’m really grateful to her for that,” Perry said of Aniston in an October 2022 interview with Sawyer.
Perry also revealed that it was Aniston who initially confronted him with a four-word warning about his drinking during their time filming the hit sitcom.
“Jennifer, she says, ‘We know you’re drinking,’” Sawyer prompted him in the interview.
“Yeah, imagine how scary a moment that was,” Perry responded.
“I should have been the toast of the town, but I was in a dark room meeting with nothing but drug dealers and completely alone,” he said.
In another resurfaced video, Perry’s co-star Courteney Cox is seen standing alongside Perry and co-star Lisa Kudrow at a premiere in the days of Friends.
“Matthew Perry is the funniest person in the whole world,” Cox tells reporters as she beams with pride and Perry chuckles.
“You know what, I mean that — I’m saying it as a joke but I actually mean it.”
Kudrow smiles as she describes how the Friends cast is a “a tight group”.
It came as fans gathered outside Perry’s home in Los Angeles where they left tributes of flowers, candles, and even a Batman toy, a reference to Perry’s final Instagram posts.
Perry’s portrayal of the loveable Chandler Bing won him a global following. A fictional character with plenty of odd quirks, Chandler made fans feel like they had a true friend.
In New York City, where the iconic TV show was set, emotional fans left tributes outside the apartment block in Greenwich Village where the show about the ups and downs of the world’s most famous friend group was set.
The site at 90 Bedford Street is becoming a site for fans to leave flowers, candles, and notes, and even the cigarettes that were smoked by Perry’s character, the wisecracking Chandler.

Fans were spotted having come out in the rain, weeping and in tears, and placing notes saying ‘Rest in Peace’ were left outside the iconic building.
And at his concert in Melbourne, Charlie Puth played the Friends theme song and the audience sang along.
And in the US, Matt Healy’s band The 1975 also played the theme song to Friends as a tribute.
Superstar Adele paid tribute to Perry at her Las Vegas show.
Fans also took to Perry’s social media to leave messages and express their grief.
On Instagram, where Perry has 8.5 million followers, fans believed the actor’s last three posts held a secret meaning.
“Do you know what I mean?” Perry had posted beneath a photo of a Halloween pumpkin carved with the Batman logo.
“Do you want us to send help? Is this your signal???” posted Tracey Rowland.
“I read his book while I was in rehab after a suicide attempt earlier this year. It helped me to get through it & gave me some hope to keep going. Now hearing that he died I’m devastated,” posted a fan.
Another post showed a pic of the moon through clouds, with the caption, “Do you understand what I’m trying to tell you? – I’m Mattman.”
“It was a cry for help,” posted a fan. “Batman signal but no one came. Goodbye Chandler Bing.”
In the star’s final post, he can be seen sitting alone in the hot tub at night, wearing headphones. Fans have speculated who took the photo and also noted the irony that it’s “the same jacuzzi he died in.”
“I did survive very stressful times thanks to him and the rest of the gang. Feels like losing a friend, doesn’t it?”
Perry was found unconscious in a hot tub at his home and first responders were unable to revive him, law enforcement sources told the Los Angeles Times.
US broadcaster NBC, which aired Friends for 10 seasons from 1994 to 2004, confirmed the death.
“We are incredibly saddened by the too soon passing of Matthew Perry,” said NBC said in a post on social media platform X, formerly Twitter.
“He brought so much joy to hundreds of millions of people around the world with his pitch perfect comedic timing and wry wit. His legacy will live on through countless generations,” it said.
