Fitzy and Wippa recall painfully awkward Chris Pine interview

Fitzy has revealed Chris Pine has a knack for derailing press appearances after yesterday’s shambolic Don’t Worry Darling premiere.

Harry Styles appears to spit on Chris Pine

Nova’s Fitzy and Wippa have a hot take on the Don’t Worry Darling drama that whipped the internet into a frenzy on Tuesday.

Addressing the commotion surrounding the film’s release, which came to a dramatic crescendo at the Venice Film Festival yesterday with viral footage appearing to portray Harry Styles spitting on Chris Pine, Fitzy had a simple explanation.

The two actors have a clever in-joke to rouse gossip-hungry fans.

The footage saw Styles appear to spit in Pine's lap as the actor looked down in bemused laughter.

Backing his theory, the radio host suggested Pine is not a fan of the promotional efforts required for a new movie, and has devised his own coping mechanisms.

Case in point: A 2013 interview Fitzy and Wippa did with the star in which he and Star Trek co-star Zach Quinto tried to cram in as many obnoxiously large words as they could.

“Look, I think he’s a great actor. I don’t know if he likes promoting movies, though,” Fitzy began of the Wonder Woman actor.

Recalling the press junket for Star Trek, Fitzy continued: “Remember as we were going into the junket, I could hear them whispering and they were talking about this wordsmith challenge. Basically, to see how many complex words that they could get into the interview to see who would be the winner.

“You know what, it actually sounded like ‘Let’s play a game of who sounds like an entitled w*nker,’” he added of the “confusing” interview before rolling the audio.

During the chat, the actors managed to drop “propinquity”, “mercurial”, “milieu”, “euphonious” and even a reference to a “whirling dervish” (a ceremonial dance practised in some areas of the Middle East), while the Nova hosts shifted in their seats uncomfortably.

Fitzy admitted the ‘game’ made both actors seem like ‘entitled w*nkers’.

In footage from the painfully awkward encounter, Fitzy is seen looking perplexed, at one stage employing a diversion tactic by pointing out an imaginary shark in the Sydney Harbour.

While they can laugh about it in hindsight, both comedians agreed it was a difficult interview to sit through.

“You wanted to call them out on it at time, but at the same time, in the same moment, you’re trying to have respect for the interview,” Wippa recalled.

The throwback comes after Pine’s representative shut down the internet theory that Harry Styles spat on him as he made his way to his seat at the Don’t Worry Darling premiere screening.

“This is a ridiculous story — a complete fabrication and the result of an odd online illusion that is clearly deceiving and allows for foolish speculation,” Pine’s spokesperson told People.

“Just to be clear, Harry Styles did not spit on Chris Pine. There is nothing but respect between these two men, and any suggestion otherwise is a blatant attempt to create drama that simply does not exist.”

Drama has dogged the film for months following an alleged feud between Olivia Wilde and Florence Pugh, Wilde and Styles’ on-set romance and questions over Shia LaBeouf’s reasons for leaving the cast.

Could Pine just be stirring the pot?
