Fox FM breakfast star Brendan Fevola has thrown down the gauntlet declaring, “this is our town, we love our town and it loves us”, as Kyle Sandilands looms large on the Melbourne radio horizon.
Fifi Box, Fevola and Nick Cody, hosts of Fox’s Fifi, Fev and Nick breakfast show, have never been in a stronger position to take the fight up to the controversial Sydney heavyweight, when the Kyle & Jackie O Show launches into Melbourne on April 29.
Fifi, Fev and Nick has doubled down on its Melbourne roots this year and its weekly Brekky in the Burbs outside broadcast has swelled the public’s affection for the show.
The program was Melbourne’s #1 FM breakfast show in the radio ratings released on Thursday with an 11.2 percent share of listeners (its biggest share result since survey 3, 2012) and had a huge cumulative audience of 694,000.
“When we came out of lockdown we started these Brekky in the Burbs, we were doing them once every four to six weeks, really just to thank Melbourne for sticking with us through what had been a really tough few years,” Box said.
“But then they just gained this momentum and what started out as a few hundred people at these street parties became thousands and then we started getting big guests at them.
“We have had Tones and I, Amy Shark, G-Flip. The Wiggles came out to Epping and then on Friday we had an international artist in Stephen Sanchez, who has played at Glastonbury, come to Sunbury and perform.
“We are the Melbourne show for the people and we are so grateful for them for sticking with us.”
Fevola welcomed the Sandilands challenge, but said “Melbourne is our town.”
“I think it is a great challenge, they have a great product in Sydney, we have the best product here in Melbourne, good luck to them,” he said.
“We love the fact we are Melbourne, we are from the ‘burbs, I’m from Narre Warren, Fifi is from Wonga Park, Nick is from Werribee. I used to own the MCG, that was the old office, but to be able to say we are Melbourne born and bred, this is our town and we love our town and it loves us, I think we are going to be OK.”
Box said the show’s focus would remain on its listeners, not Sandilands.
“We have never been a mean spirited show,” she said.
“We believe in a local breakfast show and I believe in people waking up connected to people that are living through what they are living through.”
