Former reality star and red carpet darling Brynne Gordon has revealed her legendary, eye-popping 2009 Brownlow Medal gown was in part inspired by power WAGS Bec Judd and Tania Buckley.
Forget the footy players, Gordon was the headline maker of the Brownlow that year as she made one of her first gala appearances as the young fiance of colourful businessman Geoffrey Edelsten in an outfit that was little more than a scattering of crystals and sheer material.
It sent talkback callers and website readers off the deep end.
The couple, with the 40 year age gap, would wed in a three million dollar extravaganza at Crown Casino two months later.
Gordon was impossible to miss in the dazzling, daring, unique gown by US label Nurielle on that chilly September night.
The black showgirl inspired number featured sheer sleeves, a wide plunging neckline that stopped at her navel where it met a heavily silver beaded bullseye. The outfit was completed with a Swarovski crystal-encrusted bra.
Gordon said yesterday she had no idea she would cause a fashion meltdown as she felt the gown was not particularly risque, adding that her choice of outfit was in part inspired by glamour WAGS Judd and Buckley.
“Geoff showed me pictures of Tania Buckley in her G-string dress (at the 2001 Brownlow) and Bec Judd in her very deep V red dress (at the 2004 Brownlow) and said that girls wore things that were very different, so that was all I knew about the event,” she said.
“The dress was from Las Vegas, like many of the things Geoff bought me. I had just come from LA, so I had not been in Australia all that long.
“In LA the style was quite different, you see more daring outfits there all the time. I think Australia is a bit more conservative in things like that.
“Everyone in my circle said this would be the perfect dress, so I thought ‘everyone is going to love it, I am going to love it, I am so excited’ … and then it got a different reaction.
“I did not realise on the night that I may have stood out a little bit. I was just having a good time and I did not think the dress would be a big deal.”
Fifteen years down the track, the gown still holds special meaning for Gordon.
“I still have it, I still have many of my dresses, but that one is special and sentimental,” she said.
“I probably can’t ever wear it again. I am keeping it for Starry.”
Gordon split with Edelsten, who died in 2021, in 2014 and she has previously described her life as being a rollercoaster in the ensuing years.
But now, as a single mum with a two-year-old daughter, Starry, she is content living a very normal life out of the spotlight.
“My life is so much different now – unrecognisable,” she said.
“There are definitely things I miss from my life before I had a child, because now everything is about Starry.
“I was used to really just worrying about myself and now I don’t have time to worry about myself because everything is about her.
“It is very rewarding. She is the daughter I always wanted and thought I could not have.
“As a single mum, it is hard, it can be exhausting, it is frustrating at times and at times it is isolating, but I am so lucky to have this beautiful little girl which I wanted more than anything else in the world.”
