F ooty Show great Sam Newman has spoken about what it feels like to be run over by a loved one.
Newman was hit by a vehicle driven by his then girlfriend, Leonie Jones, outside his home in Brighton in May 1997, leaving him with a broken leg, a smashed ankle and what, 23 years later, is a break-up story hard to top.
“I got run over. I got backed over by a light Korean-model car.
“No matter how light they are, when they back over you they have a sump and wheels and a diff and an engine; they are pretty, bloody, f---ing heavy,” Newman said on his You Can’t Be Serious podcast.
“Broke my leg in two places and my ankle in three.”
Newman and Jones had had a “small argument” when he got out of the passenger side of the car around 11pm on the evening in question.
As he walked behind the car he was knocked over and left lying on the road in agony as the vehicle moved away.
“I saw the brake lights go on and I thought, ‘Wow, that’s good, she has stopped’, and then I saw the reverse lights go on — and back she came for another go,” he said.
“I am lying in the back road of my house with a broken leg and ankle thinking, ‘How well am I going? This is an interesting life I am leading at the minute’.
“As she got within about 15 metres of me I calculated if I quickly assumed the position of a Swiss Army knife … I could vault over the back fence as she drove past in reverse.”
The relationship was not destined to last.
“You would not believe this, not long after that we broke up,” he said.
“Here is a tip. If ever you have an argument with a loved one and they drop you off, get on to the median strip quickly. I made the mistake of walking around the back of the car and bang, over we went.”
Jones was later fined $250.
Newman also explained his experience with cosmetic surgery after he had his nose broken. The doctor not only fixed his nose but tightened up his face.
“He made me look like a Manx cat for six years. My eyes went up like the star of I Dream of Jeannie,” he said.
