“Who am I?”
Former Sale of the Century host Tony Barber did not have to ask his famous question when he arrived at a celebration of the glory days of powerhouse TV production company Grundy in Elwood on Friday night.
At 82, Barber still has the energy of an Energiser bunny, remains a showman and knows how to make an entrance, even if the trademark running jumps he used when bounding onto the set of Sale each night have long been retired.
The reunion of stars, hosts, the glamour girls of TV, producers, writers, voice over men, executive producers and warm up guys was two years in the making and was held at the Elwood Bathers restaurant.
Barber was joined by fellow Sale of the Century host Glenn Ridge along with the show’s iconic co-hosts Nicky Buckley and Jo Silvagni.
Perfect Match host Greg Evans was as charming and gregarious as in his TV prime, as was former Wheel of Fortune host Rob Elliott.
Missing was Evans’ robot sidekick Dexter who these days resides at the ACMI museum in Melbourne.
No one asked Elliott, who is now a board game mogul, if they could buy a vowel.
Still turning heads were the glamour squad of The Price Is Right, Ann-Maree Cooksley, Celeste Billing and Suzie Cole, as were Sale of the Century’s gift shop hostesses Charlie Irwin and Marianne Van Dorslar.
The long-time voice of Channel 9 Pete Smith caught up with John Deeks, for so many years the voice over announcer for Channel 7, and Shawn Cosgrove.
Other guests included Pam Barnes, Phil Brady, Annette Allison, Julie Cox and Michael Pope.
There was so much TV history and so many stories in the room, with the event organised by Jan Campbell and Amanda Marshall.
