Gold Logie winner Grant Denyer has been confronting an embarrassing secret while in the COVID-19 shut down — he can’t cook.

Denyer has mastered many skills during the past 42 years but perhaps the most basic, cooking, has evaded him.

“To be honest I have been really embarrassed about it,” Denyer said.

“I have lived a really wonderful life that has given me some really cool opportunities and I have been to a lot of places, but I have just been on the move for the last 20 years.

“Whether it was doing the weather in a different part of the country every day or making TV shows in Melbourne or Sydney, I have been confined to hotels.

“So I am a club sandwich king but I have no cooking skills.

“When you get this kind of apocalyptic moment in life where you go, ‘Holy hell, what is my contribution to my family?’ I realised it was really little and it scared the sh-t out of me.”

While admitting he has his kitchen training wheels on, Denyer, with the help of his wife Chezzi, has progressed quickly in recent weeks from honey on toast to sticky and crispy chicken wings.

“In moments of stillness I try to upskill so as I can’t eat Chiko Rolls at truck stops any more so I decided to give it a go. I’m willing to try and fail and try some more,” he said.

Denyer is far from the only 40-something out there whose career has meant some basic life skills have been overlooked. In fact he is probably the voice of a generation now figuring out how to roast a chook, make gravy or discover that pizza does not always have to be take away.

He has also been learning to play the ukulele and is tackling farm chores.

“I sharpened the blades of my lawnmower the other day which is possibly, 10 out of 10, the blokiest thing I have ever done. I never felt more manly in my life,” he said.
