Married At First Sight star Jake Edwards has revealed he turned to monks to help find inner peace as he confronted his demons and repaired his mental health at the end of the controversial show.

Former Carlton player Edwards spent time at a wellness retreat in country Victoria after MAFS finished airing and his whirlwind relationship with fitness expert Sophie Guidolin suddenly imploded - just days after he had her name tattooed on his lower torso.

Withdrawing to reassess and reset “probably saved my life,” he said.

“No phones. No TV. No radio. Just my thoughts and my ego…” he wrote on Instagram of his reset.

“My time away was spent finding myself once again and dealing with my past and confronting my demons each and every day for four weeks.

“I learnt that my false ego isn’t a very nice person and he acts out of fear, insecurity and pain.

“He only wants to recreate my past which for me, this has hurt people around me and it isn’t what the true inner soul of who Jake Edwards represents.”

He said his life had been changed by listening to the wisdom of monks.

“I spent time sitting and talking with monks who have been practising inner peace and happiness for over 30 years and they changed my beliefs and views on my life,” he wrote.

“Spending time with only your thoughts is a scary proposition for anyone and for the first two weeks I cried every hour to release the emotion and pain I was experiencing.

“But overall, this experience changed and saved my life. I walked away from the farm, the old Jake Edwards but only better.

“There (have) been many changes in my life, both what I can and can’t control.

“I am so grateful for all my experiences and for everyone who has been in my life.”

Edwards stepped down as CEO of his mental health charity Outside The Locker Room on Friday.
