Change could be on the way for Triple M’s Hot Breakfast with radio ratings to be released at the end of September

It’s been a breakfast radio staple for more than a decade, but is change looming for Eddie McGuire and Luke Darcy’s Triple M radio show?

Eddie McGuire’s Triple M breakfast show was making headlines last week after co-host Luke Darcy became the media man of the moment for his tough and surprising interview with Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews.

But could the biggest headlines be still to come?

Specifically, will McGuire and Darcy be holding court with the show as Triple M’s all important breakfast offering in 2021?

McGuire and Darcy’s current contracts are understood to be up for negotiation at the end of the year. Both are superb and valuable performers, but after more than a decade as a dynamic duo could change be looming?

The Hot Breakfast launched in 2009 and this year has focused strongly on making news via serious interviews with heavy hitters, politicians, superstars and expert commentators.

COVID-19 has meant there have been no official radio ratings since April, with the next survey results due for release on September 29.

They will be the first indication in six months as to how audiences have moved, or not, during the COVID crisis and how shows are ranked.

Every person in radio is waiting to see how the ratings landscape has evolved over the past six months.

The always positive McGuire had zero interest in talking contracts or radio rumours about 2021 yesterday.

“There is nothing to talk about. We are flat out at the moment. We are breaking story after story. I don’t talk about these things (contracts) ever,” McGuire said.

“No one knows when my contracts come in or out. I know what I am doing, no one else needs to.”

McGuire, who is in the AFL’s Queensland hub, took an RDO from the Hot Breakfast on Friday.

“I am fine. I was just tired and took the morning off,” he said.

“One of the things we have been trying to ensure is that people know if you are not feeling ready to go don’t go, have a break, and that is what I did, I just had an RDO into the weekend so I could attack next week.”

McGuire will return to the show Monday morning

A Triple M spokesperson said the station did comment on the contract details of on-air talent.
