Break the COVID-19 lockdown boredom by having a laugh at some of the best Aussie TV news bloopers.

Live TV is often described as a tightrope with no safety net below.

There is no second take and when something goes wrong it usually gets noticed.

From birds and chooks to booze and fashion fails, have a look at the times when if it can go wrong it will.

PETER HITCHENER

Channel 9 newsreader Peter Hitchener made headlines and became an online sensation when a giant seagull appeared beside him during an evening bulletin in 2009. It was like a scene from Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds.

STEVIE JACOBS

Staying with our feathered friends, Stevie Jacobs, the then game for anything weatherman on Today, got into a flap with a large black cockerel during a live cross to an agricultural show. Karl Stefanovic’s snorts of laughter are almost as funny as Jacobs’ screeching.

GRANT DENYER

Speaking of weathermen, Grant Denyer did his time as the ‘go anywhere’ weather guy for Sunrise. One of his least enjoyable moments was passing out on air while taking a ride in a stunt plane. “Oh, he has passed out! Oh cut, we don’t want to see,” said concerned host Mel Doyle.

CARRIE BICKMORE

The Project host Carrie Bickmore rarely puts a foot wrong. But one particular night on The Project she fell off her shoe and disappeared from sight as the hosts in the studio crossed to her for a live report. A pair of red stacked heels were later identified as causing the unique tumble.

TONY JONES

Channel 9’s Tony Jones is still copping it for the night he got the cold cheek from his then news colleague Bec Judd. Judd was heading off on maternity leave and Jones surprised her by leaning in for a kiss at the end of the evening bulletin in 2016. Not realising what he was

doing Judd turned away leaving Jones with a fresh air kiss and a clip that keeps coming back to haunt him.

NATASHA EXELBY

Newsreader Natasha Exelby was reading the news for the ABC in 2017 when a day dreaming moment while a report went to air ended with headlines. She was seemingly distracted by a pen and not paying attention to a story which ended and was caught completely off guard

when the cameras returned focus to her.

BEVERLEY O’CONNOR

Another newsreader caught unawares was the ABC’s Beverley O’Connor who clearly was in the middle of a conversation with someone off screen as an interview took place on her show The World in 2017. She had not realised she was still on camera and lip readers are sure she uttered a four-letter word when she twigged her actions were being seen by the viewers.

NATARSHA BELLING

Not so much a blooper, rather a fashion faux pas, was then Channel 10 newsreader Natarsha Belling’s famous – but never worn again – zip-up jacket. Belling’s seemingly simple green jacket created headlines after viewers noticed the neckline was a surprisingly phallic shape.

Social media went wild with the tease “once you have seen it you can never unsee it.”

JACKETGATE

Jackets can cause more trouble than they are worth. Take the famous off-air tiff between Amber Sherlock and Julie Snook over white attire during an ad break on Nine News Now in 2017. The leaked footage captured a pretty unusual moment between the Channel 9 colleagues where Sherlock insisted Snook wear a jacket in an exchange that became known as “Jacketgate.”

POST-LOGIES KARL

Karl Stefanovic did his best to turn an entire episode of Today into a blooper reel when he hosted the show in a seemingly tired and emotional state the morning after the 2009 Logie Awards.

CHARLES ON COUNTDOWN

Finally, let’s wrap up this list with something that is not a blooper but outtakes from an interview that has grown in legend since it aired in 1977. Over to you Molly Meldrum and Prince Charles on Countdown.
