Channel 7’s Brian Taylor has spoken of his shock at finding his Melbourne home as ground zero of the viral “Fitzroy Garage Sesh” video, which exploded on social media.
One of Taylor’s sons had about 15 mates around for drinks before they headed off to a 21st birthday party in 2022.
A couple of weeks later, in December of that year, a video posted on TikTok of the lads milling about in the laneway outside Taylor’s abode erupted on social media.
Pundits labelled the footage an inside look at hipster blokes in the noughties hang.
“This thing erupted,” Taylor said on the Dyl & Friends podcast.
“They were accused of being little rich kids, snotty nosed little b--tards, this whole thing, and they were the most hated people in Australia for a while there, or they thought they were, because it got so much attention,” Taylor said.
“It was mind-boggling how it got out of control.
“To this day, every day, there are many people out the front taking photos, I can hear them from inside the building.
“They say, ‘this is it, this is the sesh’.
“There are school groups that come through on walks through Fitzroy that prop out the front.
“I saw Harrison (his son), I arrived, and he has got a school group in our backyard on a tour. “I said, ‘what are you doing, you imbecile’.”
Taylor said he had no idea that the original gathering had taken place and was stunned when the social media tsunami began.
“All it was was my youngest boy, who is 21, had about 15 of his mates gather at about 5pm as they were off to a 21st together,” he said.
“They all gathered, it was a sunny afternoon, they had the roller door up.
“There is a guy sitting out the front having his hair cut and another guy over there having a cigarette, and another guy with a beer and another guy playing a bit of cricket in the street, a couple of guys dancing together.
“It just looked a bit weird, the whole thing, but it was just 15 guys, all of them doing something different in the shot.
“Someone posted the video out there and away it went.”
Taylor said he wasn’t thrilled that the property was now an influencer tourist attraction.
“There was nothing in that video that I was concerned about at all, just the fact that it exposed the spot.”
Photoshoot interrupted by topless bike thief
A shirtless man with no shoes interrupted a photoshoot in St Kilda with a beloved Melbourne star, climbed a tree, started a scuffle and then stole a bike.
The bizarre situation unfolded last Thursday morning when The Castle favourite Stephen Curry was doing a photo to promote Kidney Health Australia’s Red Socks run.
Curry was limbering up at the St Kilda end of Albert Park where the photo team had gathered when the large, barefoot, scantily clad man appeared.
After asking if he could borrow the bike that was parked nearby and told no, he then climbed a tree and sat on a limb without saying anything.
A few minutes later he climbed down and announced he was taking the bike because “my life depends on it”.
The owner of the bike yelled “no” which resulted in the frazzled interloper throwing a couple of punches before making off the bicycle, riding off towards Fitzroy St.
The photoshoot team was left bewildered to say the least.
Curry was not involved in the scuffle.
Police were contacted.
No one was hurt and the shoot went ahead as planned, with those present just putting the incident down as just another day in Melbourne.
“It was all so strange and just happened out of the blue,” said one of the crowd.
“No one was hurt but it was very random. I think we were all a bit stunned.”
Life is a beach for Shelley
The Block’s Shelley Craft is stepping out of Scott Cam’s shadow to host a new show.
Craft will front a real estate series where she helps couples find their perfect beach house.
Rather than a tree change, these couples are looking for the old-fashioned sea change.
Craft takes each couple to three houses that suit their specific brief and at the end of the show, they chose that property that best fits their needs.
Called Beach House Hunters the show is produced by Abode Entertainment.
It is expected to air later this year, however on which channel is unclear.
Jefferies back with more questions for Channel 7
US-based Australian comedian Jim Jefferies has made a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it trip home to film further episodes of the Channel 7 quiz show, The 1% Club.
Jefferies shot the episodes in Sydney last month with the production having relocated from Melbourne where the first season was filmed.
The move was put down to the availability of studio space.
Jefferies recently suffered significant family heartbreak when his nephew, Lieutenant Maxwell Nugent, was among the four men who passed away in an army helicopter crash off the Whitsunday Islands in July.
The aircraft was taking part in a joint military exercise – dubbed Operation Talisman Sabre – when it crashed into the water.
“Over the years, I have had the absolute pleasure watching him (Maxwell) grow into the man he became: a kind, hardworking, sweet, honest human,” Jefferies wrote on social media.
“He led his life with honour and respect and was just a great bloke.
“He’s someone I always admired, and I was so proud to call him my nephew — I still am.
“This tragedy reminds us of the risks that come with those jobs, and the immense bravery of those who choose to stick their necks out every day so that we feel safe.
“I wish I had the chance to say goodbye. Max, thank you so much, mate. I love you. RIP.”
