Pop superstar Dua Lipa has performed Natalie Imbruglia’s hit, Torn, as part of a surprise covers segment on her latest tour.
“Every night, in every city, I’m going to do a song by a local artist,” Lipa told a packed house at Rod Laver Arena on Wednesday.
“(On Monday), we did AC/DC’s Highway To Hell. Tonight we’re going to go to the 1990s … with Natalie Imbruglia and Torn.”
The show was the second of five concerts Lipa will perform in Melbourne.
Lipa’s two-hour spectacle, named after her latest album Radical Optimism, is a joyous mix-tape of absolute bangers, relentless light shows, and dazzling costume changes.
It’s hard to upstage the constant swirl of lasers, confetti explosions, showgirl feathers and sexy choreography.
But Lipa did so, simply and effectively, occasionally stopping the show, and its intricately-timed routines, to slow everything down and connect, one on one, with her fans.
Lipa took selfies, snapped a Polaroid, drew a heart-shaped picture, and enjoyed short and sincere conversations with her followers, nicknamed “Loves,” surrounding a runway stage.
Later, she took that engagement to another level, leading a singalong from the mosh pit, to Be The One.
It was a total boss move.
Highlights included One Kiss, Hallucinate, and New Rules. The excellent Happy For You showcased a tougher edge to Lipa’s pop-dance arsenal.
“There have been so many years of touring and travelling and doing this night after night,” Lipa said.
“I feel very grateful to be here in Melbourne. It’s so surreal to be here.
“What a beautiful night. Thank you for your love, thank you for your energy.”
Dua Lipa performs at Rod Laver Arena on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday.
