Guy Sebastian says his wife Jules was banned from going to a Human Nature gig under the strict rules of the church they used to attend.
Sebastian has released a new single, Let Me Drink, which thematically is about switching off, and having fun.
He told Confidential: “You get in this mode where you’re working so hard, but what’s it all for. If I’m not enjoying life, then why? I need to realign.”
Sebastian and Jules Egan attended an Assemblies Of God church when they were younger. Asked when he had his first drink, Sebastian said: “The church said ... we weren’t allowed to drink, or go to any bar, club or see a secular music gig.
“Jules was banned from going to Human Nature. She was told, “If you go to that Human Nature gig you won’t lead worship on Sunday”. Human Nature!
“It’s not Slayer or Megadeth,” Sebastian, said, laughing.
Former boy band Human Nature had hits including Whisper Your Name and Wishes, and now enjoys a long-held residency at The Venetian in Sin City.
Sebastian said there was “danger” in the church-related bans because it “mystifies ... and gives power to something you can control”.
Today, he’s a fan of whisky, but “geeks out on the process” and production side.
Let Me Drink features US old-soul combo The Hamiltones and rapper Wale.
Meanwhile, Guy and Jules, through The Sebastian Foundation, have teamed up with Cadbury’s Secret Santa campaign, inspiring Australians to give anonymously during the Christmas season.
Guy said: “Little acts of kindness can really make a difference”.
