What year is this?! Kings of the 1980 flood Melbourne

Spandau Ballet. U2. Go West. What kind of bizarre vortex brought the kings of 1980s music to Melbourne at exactly the same time for different events?

What year is this?!

Tony Hadley, the former frontman of Spandau Ballet, was at Southgate; U2 were at East Melbourne and Docklands, and Go West, A Flock Of Seagulls and Cutting Crew were in St Kilda.

Hadley was at a loss to explain the bizarre vortex that brought the kings of 1980s music to Melbourne on the exact same day on Friday, for three different reasons.

“I can’t explain why all of us here,” Hadley told Confidential.

“It’s so strange. Thank God people have a sense of nostalgia or nobody would care!”

“Listen, none of us are remotely going to do anything else, so here we all are in Melbourne, trying to do something we’re good at,” Hadley said.

He has opted to see his mates Go West and Cutting Crew tonight, and hopes to catch up with U2 later.

“We always got on with U2. They’re really nice guys,” Hadley said.

“Most people were pretty cool; sometimes you’d meet a miserable one.”

‘MELLOWED’ RAY HADLEY TO WED FOR A THIRD TIME

Hadley toured with Spandau Ballet in 2015, but it ended badly.

“They know why I left. You don’t leave a band like Spandau Ballet because they put sugar in your tea,” he said.

“I’ve never spoken publicly about it, and that’s something I hold on to. But they know why.

He added: “I think it was incredibly shortsighted to push me away the way they did, because in 2020, it’s our 40th anniversary.”

Spandau Ballet’s debut album, Journeys To Glory, was released in October 1980.

“I’ll be celebrating my 40 years in show business. I have no idea what they’ll be doing.”

Tony Hadley performs at the Forum Theatre on February 29. Tickets are on sale now.
