Vue De Monde chef Bennett and Neighbours star West, who have six children, have recently weathered headlines about marriage woes and a rumoured split.

“The bottom line is Madeleine and I care about each other deeply and we’re not letting anything go at all.

“The kids are starting school up here next month so it’s exciting. I’ve had a property up here for 10 years and we’ve got two bases. I needed to be in a place that makes me happy and Byron makes me happy.”

Bennett said he needed a break from his full work schedule which will include not returning to MasterChef next year.

He had long been a guest judge on Ten’s cooking show and says he leaves on good terms.

“My primary goal now is looking after my children and Madeleine has gone out and done what she’s wanted to do for years,” Bennett said.

“I just needed a bit of a sea change. We’ve got six amazing kids and that’s our dynamic.”

West, a successful author and actor, has just finished filming Ten’s new WAG drama Playing For Keeps.

It hasn’t been a great year for Bennett, who in May denied claims he underpaid staff and ripped off suppliers.

Bennett was in Byron Bay this week to help launch Stella Artois’s partnership with Matt Damon’s water.org and the Buy a Lady a Drink campaign to raise awareness of the global water crisis.

Bennett will also open a new live music venue in October on King St in the city.
