Radio stalwart Darren James and weather presenter Livinia Nixon are rumoured to be in the running to take over Denis Walter’s 3AW afternoon show.
In one of the bigger shake-ups of the Melbourne radio roster, 3AW revealed this week that Walter was moving to hosting the local Nights program from next year.
A great deal of attention will fall upon his replacement as Walter was a popular local institution, who served 11 years in the role.
A strong talent is expected to be needed to allay fears of 3AW becoming a poor cousin to Sydney stablemate 2GB and simply carrying networked shows that lack a Melbourne flavour.
Industry sources said 3AW Weekend Breakfast host Darren James was one name being flagged.
Nine News weather presenter Livinia Nixon is another name being cited, with 3AW said to be interested in a female host.
Also rumoured to be in the running to replace Walter is Domain Group magazines editor Emily Power.
Power co-hosts Weekend Breakfast alongside Darren James and has recently been given regular opportunities as a contributor.
3AW were keeping their cards close to the chest when approached by the Herald Sun.
A spokesmen said new host for the afternoon shift would be announced before Christmas.
