Time On is your daily wrap-up of all the footy gossip and banter.
Should Collingwood win the premiership on Saturday Brooke Warne will look to the skies.
The daughter of late cricket great Shane Warne says it would be a sentimental moment.
“In the year 2023, my Dad’s favourite number was 23, so if my team was to win it would make my whole year,’’ she said.
“My Dad would have loved it to be St Kilda but I think he’d be pretty happy if his daughter got to have the 2023 premiers. I’d think he’s doing something up there for me.”
Warne goes to every Collingwood game and said she barracked for the club because of her mum Simone Callahan.
She is also good friends with some of the players and set up Pies star Brayden Maynard with his partner Ashlee Browning.
“I set them up almost nine years ago, I was friends with them both and we ended up going to the movies and I sat in between them,’’ Warne said.
“I’m so close to Brayden and all the Pies boys are so great and welcoming.
“(President) Jeff Browne is a great man and has sorted my tickets for the game. I’m hoping it’s the best day.”
Jones eyes a new peak
Tony Jones is ready to scale new heights, both physically and in age.
The Sunday Footy Show is turning 60 on Sunday and hopes his beloved Magpies give him the perfect birthday present with a premiership on Saturday.
He is also preparing to climb an eight metre mountain on live television during Friday night’s telethon to raise $500,000 for My Room Children’s Cancer charity.
“It’s hard to believe I’m turning 60, I feel fitter and healthier than I did 30 years ago,” Jones said.
“The last thing I need is Nathan Brown jumping out of a cake.
“I’m determined to do the climb, I’m not scared of heights but I’d rather not fall. I haven’t seen it other than photo but for half a million dollars I will definitely be doing it.”
Jones also expects to see a humorous compilation of his eating habits after being caught on video tucking into KFC.
“For all the publicity they’ve got I hope they’re putting in $10,000,” he said.
“I’ve got to be very careful now when I eat in public.”
Pies fan Browne hopes to go out on a high
It’s not just AFL boss Gillon McLachlan exiting after this weekend, Tom Browne finishes up on Channel 7 after this weekend.
It would be a dream exit for the chief footy reporter if he bows out with a premiership for his team, Collingwood — he is the son of Pies president Jeff Browne.
“The job’s in front of the Pies,” he said.
“It’s an enormous opportunity. But if they win it would be a fairytale finish. I love the club. And couldn’t think of anything more exciting.
“I remember being in the rooms doing a live cross in 2018. It would be an incredible exit and beyond a dream.”
Browne admits he is an exuberant supporter and he is looking forward to his next chapter, working in finance in Sydney.
“I’m incredibly positive about my media career and it’s a great opportunity to turn my focus to a new chapter in my 40s,” he said.
“I’ve had 13 years at Seven, it’s been amazing and it requires a 24/7 commitment. With two children now I’m ready for something different.”
Robbie’s got the Blues over Grand Final
Outgoing AFL boss Gillon McLachlan has revealed that superstar singer Robbie Williams would have come back to perform at the MCG if Carlton had made the Grand Final.
McLachlan said the avid Blues fan, who was a huge hit as the grand final entertainment last year, would have returned.
“If Carlton got into the grand final there was a rumour he was going to come and play,’’ said Hamish McLachlan, host of the Victorian Chamber Grand Final Luncheon at the MCG.
“That’s true,’’ replied Gillon.
“If Carlton won he would have had come, yes. He would have had to pay for his ticket somehow.”
McLachlan also revealed Williams had been paid “just under a couple million bucks” to perform last year.
Hamish led a discussion between his brother and the incoming CEO Andrew Dillon in a room full of prominent business leaders and identities.
Dillon, who described himself as a footballer opposite to the flamboyant Warwick Capper, told a story of how Gillon was mistaken for a Home and Away actor.
“We were on a flight back from Sydney earlier this year and Gill stood up and there were two women sitting across from me and one of the women looked at him and said ‘god you’re tall, I know you from somewhere,’’ Dillon said.
“And Gill is about to explain and she said I know you from Home and Away.
“Gill spun on his heels and he was close to the front of the plane. Then I heard one say to the other, I didn’t realise (actor) Alex Papps was that tall.”
McLachlan said his advice to Dillon was to have confidence in the decisions he makes.
