Stephen Quartermain is returning to footy commentary next year.

The popular broadcaster, whose famous call of “Leo Barry you star” in the 2005 grand final entered footy folklore, will be behind the microphone for some games on SEN in 2025.

After the success of Hawks Radio, when he commentated alongside Hawks legends Robert DiPierdomenico and Shane Crawford and fellow fan Anthony ‘Lehmo’ Lehmann, Quartermain was urged to give it another crack by his two children Jack and Scarlett.

“I’m going to dip my toe back in to footy commentary,’’ Quartermain told the Herald Sun.

“Hawks radio went really well and the feedback was great.

“It was mainly my son and daughter who said ‘what are you doing sitting around at home on the weekends, get out and call’.”

Quartermain, the Ten News First sport newsreader, started his AFL radio commentary career at Melbourne AM station Magic in 1995, before joining Triple M where he spent well over a decade.

It was there he was involved in another famous rice throwing incident involving colleague Jason Dunstall. He was also the prime commentator when Network 10 had the footy broadcast rights.

How many games he calls on SEN next year is still to be determined.

“I hadn’t called for five years, my last call was the 2019 grand final,’’ Quartermain said.

“I was still calling a lot until Covid came and then everything shut down and I didn’t get back into it after Covid.

“I actually just enjoyed seeing old friends and even the ground staff at the MCG.

“It was just my kids saying what are you doing sitting around, get back into it. People said it was great to see you again. The feedback was really lovely and it gave me further motivation to do more next year.”
