IT’S the five-star tennis experience that aces other Grand Slams.
When Hollywood movie stars Will Ferrell and Will Smith, celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay, and former F1 driver Mark Webber, sat courtside at the Australian Open, for all to see, it was the icing on an exclusive yet secretive cake of chauffeurs, butlers, private suites with a circular bed, player access — and all away from prying eyes.
WILL FERRELL REVEALS WHY HE’S IN MELBOURNE
The 12 on-courts seats at Rod Laver Arena are not offered at other Grand Slams, including Wimbledon, Roland Garros and Flushing Meadows.
Those seats are not for sale — they can’t be bought or negotiated — but star power certainly helps. Tennis Australia puts a call out to big names who might be home for summer — Chris and Liam Hemsworth, Kylie and Dannii Minogue, Delta Goodrem and Hugh Jackman.
This year, Ferrell was on holiday, Smith visited to promote a new movie, and Ramsay is filming MasterChef Australia.
The stars are chauffeured into the underbelly of Rod Laver Arena, and arrive at the player’s entrance.
Smith alighted from his car and straight to a conversation with a passer-by — French player Jo Wilfred Tsonga.
Smith visited with an eight-strong entourage, including two bodyguards and a social media team.
He took an immediate shine to Nick Kyrgios and asked to have a hit with Dylan Alcott.
The private suite, a few metres from centre court, includes a personal waiter, a dressing room, with a bed, shower and toilet. It also has plush couches and a big-screen TV.
Smith ordered kingfish jalapeño from on-site restaurant, Nobu.
Ramsay, with two personal assistants in tow, crossed the road to visit British chef Angela Hartnett’s pop-up eatery at the Holden Centre.
While the stars seemed to enjoy a stack of freebies, their celebrity reach paid dividends. Ferrell’s Anchorman character interview with Roger Federer went viral, while Smith and Ramsay’s social media posts from centre court got 600,534 and 226,249 likes, respectively.
