The glamour surrounding the Elvis movie rolled into Melbourne on Tuesday night with the star-studded premiere at Crown.
The movie, directed by Australian film icon Baz Luhrmann, spans 20 years of Elvis Presley’s life, and was filmed on the Gold Coast.
Luhrmann’s wife, producer, costume and set designer Catherine Martin, was the main red carpet guest along with cast members Xavier Samuel, Dave Gannon and Nicholas Bell.
It stars Austin Butler as Elvis, Tom Hanks as Presley’s manager Colonel Tom Parker, and Melbourne actor Olivia DeJonge as Priscilla Presley.
“What’s wonderful is to see audiences so far really embracing the movie, the other thing that’s wonderful is I know Baz and I are really committed to movies in the cinema, theatrical releases,” Martin said.
“It’s a movie that is more than just a biopic.”
Luhrmann said he felt a duty to portray Elvis in a balanced way.
He added: “I did feel a responsibility not to celebrate him or say ‘isn’t he the greatest’, but to represent him fairly.”
