Shane Warne has opened up about the scrutiny during his relationship with Elizabeth Hurley, saying the toll it took on his children was the toughest part.

“When I got engaged to Elizabeth that was the hardest thing,’’ he said.

“Because growing up with some of the choices I made and some of the wrong decisions I made, it affected my children. They were the hardest hit on that.

“I didn’t mind what they said about me in the end, I was whatever. The way it affected my kids was the hardest thing especially when it was your own fault. That was the hardest thing to take for me.”

Speaking to the You Cannot Be Serious podcast with Sam Newman, Mike Sheahan and Don Scott, the former king of spin said he and actor Hurley were stalked by paparazzi.

“When I got together with Elizabeth, that was really odd,” Warne said.

“Because I had the sporting media that would follow you and I suppose the entertainment media would collide, so anywhere we went we were being followed by anywhere between six to 10 paparazzi photographers that would run you off the road.

“They would follow you. Stop you, two cars in front of you, make you react … my kids in the car were scared one day too, it was ridiculous.

“Mainly here in Melbourne and it was more intense in the UK.

“Little things like you’d walk out of the house and there’d be six photographers there and I’d have my tracky pants on and a t-shirt and suddenly the next day all the papers would critique you and you’d say, what, who gives a s … really.

“That was weird but we used to laugh about it. Elizabeth laughed, I laughed, but it was quite a fun time.”

Warne said he and Hurley were still good friends.

He said he was proud of how he handled himself when they met at the Goodwood races in the UK.

“I was pretty happy with myself, I played it calmly and nicely,” Warne said.

“We crossed paths and hit it off straight away.

“She was lovely, she was fantastic. She still is a very good friend, we still speak all the time. She’s great.”
