AUSTRALIAN swimming legend Shane Gould says experience helped her claim a life-changing victory on Australian Survivor: Champions v Contenders.
Gould, 61, a world recorder holder and three-time Olympic gold medallist, said she was still in shock after her narrow win over Sharn Coombes and Brian Lake to secure $500,000 in prizemoney.
“The whole experience was surreal but so real at the same time,’’ Gould said.

“Because you had to survive. You had to make alliances, you had to co-operate with other people to get through. I was really more interested in the whole process. So the money was like a carrot, but I was more interested in the experience.
“Now that it’s happened I can’t believe it.”
Gould said she lost 12kg through the competition.
“Some say you’re 61 and that could be a disadvantage,’’ she said.
“Well it is against the physicality of young athletes. But in some senses it was an advantage because I’ve got all these years of experience of knowing how to pace myself and manage my energy and manage my emotions and how to get along with people you might not normally associate with.
“And just sizing up situations and being able to make decisions on the fly. And I’m so glad there weren’t other 60 year-olds there because they would have been tough competition.”
Gould said she would build a house in Tasmania with her windfall after beating 22 other contestants after 50 days in the tropical region of Savusavu.
