AUSTRALIAN chart-toppers Birds Of Tokyo and Dean Lewis will perform at the The Park at Melbourne Cup Carnival.

“We’re psyched ... to be part of one of the biggest calendar events in Melbourne,” Birds Of Tokyo singer Ian Kenny told Confidential. “It’s such a big deal for Melbourne, the nation stops for it, and we feel right at home being a part of it.”

Birds Of Tokyo and Owl Eyes will play The Park on Cup Day, Dean Lewis and Jungle Giants on Oaks Day, and Kian and Young Frnaco on Stakes Day.

Birds Of Tokyo’s hits include Plans, Lanterns, Wild At Heart and Good Lord.

Kenny, who fronts Birds Of Tokyo and another rock band Karnivool, said Birds hope to release an album early next year.

Karnivool is also in the studio and will perform at a rock festival in India in November.

“They’re both very different bands and careers,” Kenny said. “With Birds, I’ve learned what it takes to get a band to this point, 15 years in. We’ve seen all the s--- you can imagine that gets thrown at a band — the highs, the lows, the whole lot. We’ve survived a lot.

“Karnivool, on the other hand, is a very different scene,” he said. “What it takes to get results in that band takes time. I’ve learned patience in the band.”

Caroline Ralphsmith, of the Victorian Racing Club, said the 2019 Park line up will deliver an “all-encompassing experience for racegoers.”

She added: “We’re delighted to be able to provide a platform for local emerging music talent and bring some of the country’s biggest names to Flemington for all to enjoy.”

Birds Of Tokyo will also play a free concert at Yarra Park after the AFL Grand Final parade on September 27.

Entrance to The Park is free for all racegoers.
