THE lack of a Sydney team in the NRL grand final on Sunday night had ratings significantly down on last year, following a similar result for the AFL the day before.
Proving Sydney is the key to ratings success when it comes to sport, Sunday’s match between the Melbourne Storm and the North Queensland Cowboys experienced a drop of 322,000 viewers compared with last year’s grand final between the Storm and Cronulla Sharks.
This year, 2.325 million metro viewers tuned in to watch the Storm take out the title, 355,000 less than watched the AFL final between the Adelaide Crows and Richmond Tigers on Saturday (2.680 million).
The AFL combined average audience was also down 14 per cent on last year’s final between the Sydney Swans and Western Bulldogs.
The drop in NRL ratings comes despite US rapper Macklemore’s much-hyped and controversial performance in which he found himself at the centre of the same-sex marriage debate.

The singer’s pregame five-song set, in which he performed his marriage equality anthem Same Love, threatened to overshadow the game itself.
The lack of a Sydney team also put a dent in crowd numbers, with the clash failing to sell out, leaving 4000 seats going begging at ANZ stadium.
