A new free service using world first technology to deliver critical messages is being billed as the global ‘lockdown app’.
The GPost app, currently being used in New York by NYPD and the US Marshals Service, will launch in Australia tomorrow.
Designed by Melbourne engineer Rob Hardy, it locates where you are and can send localised and relevant immediate alerts.
Hardy is working with a number of federal and state agencies including Home Affairs and Human Services, the SES and CFA.
“Given the success in New York we have fast tracked the launch in Australia,’’ Hardy said.
“We were preparing to launch later this year ahead of the summer bushfire threat, but have brought it forward to enable localised personal messages as further lockdown measures are implemented.
“The world first technology will see us partner with federal and state governments along with key emergency services and other groups like local councils.”
The technology works even when phone towers are down and may have helped saved lives during rescue efforts at the time of Australia’s deadly bushfires.
Mum of two, stylist and business owner Lana Wilkinson, said at a time when information is critical, the app would be a must for families.
“We’re not always seeing things as they happen and as a parent and business owner it will enable me to know what’s going on,’’ Wilkinson said.
“Our phones are attached to our hands at the moment, this is localised which provides exactly what you need to know.”
