A new indigenous footy show has been developed by NITV and the AFL.

Called Yokayi Footy, the show will be filmed out of AFL House and will premiere on March 18.

It features three hosts — former Adelaide, Sydney and Collingwood player Tony Armstrong; AFLW advocate and youth pioneer Bianca Hunt, and former triple premiership Brisbane Lions and Indigenous All Stars player Darryl White.

It will fill the void left by the Marngrook Footy Show which was axed last year after 12 years on air.

“It’s an opportunity to engage with a younger audience and develop a show in that space,’’ Armstrong said.

“I’m sure at times it will be serious but it is about entertainment. We want to promote indigenous culture through having fun. The plan is to have a rotating guest with us.

“The AFL in general has played a massive role in a lot of Indigenous causes and this is an example of that.”

Armstrong said Yokayi, a Noongar word from the southwest of Western Australia, means victory or a feeling of joy.

NITV developed the show with the AFL after noting that 53 per cent of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders are under the age of 25, and while AFL is one of the most popular sports for the demographic, there was no show that had been created to reflect this.

Armstrong will also call footy for Triple M.

“I’ll be calling 15 games which is exciting,’’ he said.

“Last year it was a bit of a big deal and being able to do this on a consistent basis is great.

“Triple M have been really supportive.”
