John Wood says winning a Gold Logie doesn’t help your career

Veteran Aussie actor John Wood claims winning the Gold Logie was worthless for his career, saying taking out Aussie TV’s top prize didn’t help him land any new roles.

Gold Logie winning actor John Wood had questioned the power of the television industry prize by saying it never led to work offers.

“I’m not sure how much a Gold Logie is worth anyway,” Wood told Confidential.

“I’ve never been offered a job because of winning a Gold Logie. It didn’t finish my career, but my career didn’t take off either.”

Wood won the golden statue in 2006 for his role on the popular police drama Blue Heelers after ten years of being nominated and missing out.

He was the subject of multiple radio and media campaigns in an effort to help win him the award.

His comments follow controversy over comedian and quiz show host Tom Gleeson’s Gold Logie win earlier this month.

“There’s been a lot of concern I’m turning this award into a joke — but what you’re forgetting is I’m a comedian, I love jokes,” Gleeson said in his victory speech.

He added: “Turns out I’m just really good at manipulating the media — which, if you think about it, is why we’re all here, so maybe I do deserve this award.”

Fellow Gold Logie nominee Amanda Keller said Gleeson’s approach made her upset.

“It wasn’t a joke to me,” Keller said.

“I don’t know why in TV we’re embarrassed to be proud of our work. I was proud to be nominated.”

Wood said the bottom line is, Gleeson is a comedian.

“I’m not going to bag him. It’s what he does,” Wood said.

Wood, on the red carpet at the Helpmann Awards, which recognises live performance, said he didn’t usually go to the event.

“I haven’t been in a show that would be eligible for a Helpmann nomination for years,” he said.

“To be honest, I’m here because I’ve been dragged in by a publicist.”
