Nathan Buckley has spoken on AFL player earnings, revealing the average wage of a male footy player is $400,000.
The figure discussed during a conversation on I’m a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! shocked singer Brooke McClymont who admitted she knew nothing about AFL.
“Holy hell, 400 grand a year — it just blew my mind how much money there is in football,’’ she said.
“That’s insane amount of money ... I’ve got to somehow figure out to involve footy into my gigs.”
Buckley spoke of his own career at Collingwood as a player and a coach.
“I’d never considered I got there on talent. I considered I got there on hard work,’’ he said.
“But I had talent, I was a much better player as I went along.
“You need to be able to handle the workload, you need to be able to handle the scrutiny and you need to be able to perform when you need to perform.”
He said: “Average wage for an AFL player, it’s pushing up towards 400 (thousand) per player. The average wage across the whole competition.
“When you put your foot in the door you’re on between 100-150 (thousand) straight up.”
