Missy Higgins and Adam Briggs win 2017 Screen Music Awards in Melbourne

Popular singer-songwriter Missy Higgins and chart-topping rap provocateur Adam Briggs won Screen Music Awards in Melbourne tonight.

MISSY Higgins and Adam Briggs were among the winners at the 2017 Screen Music Awards at the Melbourne Recital Centre tonight.

Higgins (below), a popular singer-songwriter, and Briggs (right), one half of the chart-topping rap crew A.B. Original, won awards for the Best Original Song Composed for the Screen (Torchlight) and Best Television Theme (Fox League Super Saturday), respectively.

Higgins’ song, featured in Don’t Tell, was based on true events and a 2001 legal case that changed the handling of child abuse claims in Australia.

Briggs said of Here, the track he co-wrote with Justin Shave and Charlton Hill: “The song reflects the journey of the indigenous players, who give so much excitement and leadership to the sport and community week in and week out.”

“I tried to my best to celebrate that journey. Sports was always the great equaliser,” Briggs told Confidential. “It was one of the first protest grounds that black fellas had, to represent, be equal, and get better.”

Sarah Blasko, who has released a buzzworthy new single Phantom, was nominated in two categories.

“It’s really different writing music for film because you’re serving someone else’s vision,” Blasko told Confidential. “It’s music from a very different perspective, supporting scenes, or supporting dialogue. You’re making music to fit the action.”
