FORMER Married At First Sight participant Zoe Hendrix says this season’s ugly scenes between firefighter Andrew Jones and his TV bride have made for uncomfortable viewing.
The show’s best success story says Jones was behaving more like a teenager than an adult after footage of his rants against Gold Coast hair salon assistant Cheryl Maitland were aired.
“I didn’t particularly find what some of the stuff that was said about Cheryl ... I just think it’s not what a proper man does,” Hendrix said.
“Isn’t he, like, 38 years old? We’re not talking about a 16-year-old boy who is still discovering and learning about how you talk about women and how you behave.”
Hendrix said Jones would have had cameras in his face when he made the comments and should have known better. “It’s just the difference between what a gentleman is and what a boy is.”
Married At First Sight has been a hit this year, averaging more than 1 million viewers a night. Hendrix and partner Alex Garner have proven to be the most successful couple in its history to date, and welcomed daughter Harper Rose four months ago
Garner said he thought Jones’ comments may have been overblown.
“On a boys’ night you have a bit of banter but I think it might have gone overboard a little bit,” he said. “What we saw was probably the worst of it.”
This year’s new format, which includes a Survivor-style commitment ceremony where couples decide whether to stay or leave and group dinner parties, has ramped up the controversy. The tension between Maitland and Jones has also kept viewers glued to their screens.
Hendrix and Garner say they were thankful for the chance to meet on the show and were now enjoying their daughter, while also juggling property development.
They are currently building a three-unit development in Ferntree Gully.
Hendrix said: “We’re good, we’re a little family now.”
