Melbourne breakfast radio star Lauren Phillips is engaged.
The popular broadcaster and TV presenter says her boyfriend, private jet tycoon Paul O’Brien popped the question while they holidayed in Mykonos with friends, including Hollywood superstars Chris Hemsworth and Matt Damon.
“I still can’t believe it. I’ve been keeping a secret from you for a little while,” Phillips said on her KIIS-FM radio show with Jason Hawkins.
“It’s such a nice feeling. We’ve been together for three and a half years now. He is an incredible man, and I am the best version of me when I’m around him. I’m so grateful for him. We’ve been through a lot in a short amount of time. I feel very lucky. We’re really happy.”
Phillips said the proposal was a total shock.
“I did not expect it at all. Maybe I should’ve expected it, but he totally put me off the scent,” she said.
“We went to Mykonos and met up with all of our friends and turns out I was the only person who didn’t know about it.
“We were going to have a big party by the pool at the house we rented. We were all dancing around the pool, and he just looked at one of his friends and said, ‘This is it.’
“The sun’s setting, it’s a beautiful moment and all our friends are happy. So, my worst nightmare came true, he proposed in front of all our friends,” Phillips said.
“He doesn’t normally make a speech. He isn’t the centre of attention kind of guy and I thought he was just going to say how lucky we all were. It was a bit of a pinch-me-moment.
“I had no idea and then next minute he was down on one knee. I think I thought he was joking. It was an out of body experience.
“He started by saying how lucky we are to having such an amazing group of friends and then went onto say there is no one he would rather have around us at that moment than this incredible group of friends who had been through so much with us.
“I don’t think I even looked at the ring. I just hugged him and cried and then we stood up and we all celebrated. Everyone said, ‘You didn’t say yes,’ and I’m like ‘Of course it is a yes!’
“We then called my family who were at home at the time. He asked my dad. He is a gentleman.”
Phillips was formerly married to TV producer Lachlan Spark. Before that, she was in a long-term relationship with Cats legend Gary Ablett Jr.
