Curtis Stone says he is considering a move back to Australia after a “crazy year” in the US.
The LA-based chef has just launched a new restaurant over there called Picnic Society, but admits he is missing home after not being able to return to Melbourne.
“It’s the longest time in maybe 15 years I haven’t been back and it feels really strange,’’ Stone told the Herald Sun.
“I really miss it, more than ever. It’s a chaotic time over here in the US so I miss it even more knowing that where you are is a little nuts.
“As a business owner and as a dad, you’re trying to stabilise things and make sure everything is safe and alright.
“We have that conversation a lot in our house at the moment. Australia has never looked so enticing.
“We’ve always held out hope we’d live between the two places or maybe move back one day.
So that’s still how we feel and probably more than ever escalating those conversations.”
Stone launched Curtis Stone Events Australia in February and has now launched a range of gourmet boxes exclusively in Victoria.
The concept was born to reflect the changing landscape of how entertaining this Summer will look. Picnic Society at The Grove in LA champions Covid-safe outdoor dining.
“The industry has been pretty devastated everywhere,’’ Stone said.
“The time is increasing in your backyard and at home and you can do it well and affordably.”
Stone admits he worries about the industry, particularly back in Australia.
“Who knows what the future holds, the whole industry is on its knees,’’ he said.
“Everyone is wondering how we will ever recover from it.
“Is there a switch that’s going to get flicked and everyone is going to get back to dining in restaurants, or is there a really slow gradual process that gets us back to a place that we’re sustainable again. It’s really uncertain.”
