It seems hard to believe, but Kylie Minogue’s gold hotpants have hit their quarter century milestone after first sending the pop world into a spin.
The tiny ruched gold lame pants, purchased in a London flea market for 50 pence ($1.05 Australian), were launched into pop cultural stratosphere after Minogue wore the barely there derrière apparel in the eye catching video for her chart topping single Spinning Around which was released on June 19, 2000.
The Europop/disco inspired song, the first release off her hugely successful Light Years album, marked another chapter of reinvention for Minogue, propelling her back to the top of the Australian charts, six years after her previous number one single Confide In Me.
While the song was a hit, the gold hotpants became their own story.
The maker of the hotpants is unknown, the origin of the clothing is unknown and just how old they are is unknown.
The are described is having been made somewhere between 1970 and 2000.
But the itsy bitsy gold lame hotpants certainly made sure Minogue’s song was known, that the video was watched and that the Aussie singer was back in the headlines.
Minogue acknowledged the anniversary of Spinning Around and her hotpants rise to fame, doing a shout out to her fans about the whereabouts of the pants on Thursday.
The delicate and ageing hotpants are housed at the Arts Centre Melbourne as part of her costume archive. More pieces from the extensive Minogue archive will hopefully be on public display when the Australian Museum of Performing Arts opens at the Arts Centre in December 2025.
