Brandon Flowers of The Killers has praised Jack Riewoldt’s rock star skills.

The Richmond player got spur-of-the-moment approval from the band’s management to join them on stage to sing their classic Mr Brightside during their post AFL Grand Final performance in 2017.

“We just did it on a whim,” Flowers told Confidential.

“Everyone was on such a high that night, especially Jack. We were just feeling loose. We’ve never done anything like that. It just felt okay to be playful.”

Flowers said he was impressed with Riewoldt’s performance — even if the footballer admitted he’d been holding the microphone away from his mouth at times as his voice was ruined from celebrating the win.

“I had fun up there singing it with him, he was still flying from their victory and that song already sounds like a victory song but it went to another level up on that stage that night.”

Australia’s women’s cricket team did a Jack Riewoldt last weekend when they sang Firework with Katy Perry after their victorious match at the MCG.

The Killers, who released a new single Caution last week, will play AAMI Park on November 21 – their biggest headline show in Melbourne to date.

Tickets go on sale next Monday at 11am.

Their sixth album Imploding the Mirage is released on May 29 and includes guests Lindsey Buckingham and kd lang.

The Killers’ 2017 AFL Grand Final performance was so popular the band launched a 2018 arena tour off the back of it, selling out 10 shows across Australia.

Their last album, 2017’s Wonderful Wonderful, reached No. 1 in Australia.

As well as Mr Brightside, their hits include Somebody Told Me, All These Things That I’ve Done, Human, The Man, Bones, When You Were Young and Smile Like You Mean It.

The band will tour with Johnny Marr as opening act overseas – the former Smiths guitarist joined them on stage at Coachella last year — however their opening act for Australia has yet to be confirmed.
