AFL legend Kevin Sheedy says it was a disgrace that Lachie Neale had to present himself with the Brownlow Medal.
The Lions midfielder had to awkwardly put the Medal around his own neck after Nat Fyfe, last year’s winner, congratulated him from Perth.
“It lacked common sense and it was just dumb,’’ Sheedy said.
“I don’t care who it was but surely the creative thinking department is better than that.
“The coach Chris Fagan was in the room, apparently former winner Simon Black was there too. I’m pretty sure it wouldn’t have been a COVID problem.”
Sheedy said Fagan and the Lions had been one of the stories of the season and the moment deserved better.
“I probably would have said go pour yourself a drink of champagne too,’’ Sheedy said.
“He didn’t even have a glass of water.
“They’ve put footy on the map up there and they didn’t get it right.”
While disappointed with the Brownlow situation, Sheedy was pleased to see the Tigers had nominated tennis world no.1 Ash Barty to present the Premiership Cup if they win.
“It’s a great decision, she’s a Tiger in Queensland who is a champion,’’ he said.
Sheedy will miss his first grand final since 1956 as Geelong and Richmond play at the Gabba on Saturday night.
Watch Sheedy in our special AFL Grand Final and Cox Plate Confidential broadcast live on the Herald Sun Facebook page at 2pm on Saturday. Other guests include Daryl Braithwaite, Jacqui Felgate and Hawks star Jack Gunston.
