Katy Perry says she will absolutely perform her hits Roar and I Kissed a Girl at the MCG on Saturday, promising her show will be bigger than anything she’s done before.
The US superstar says she’s described the Grand Final and AFL to people back home as like “our Super Bowl”.
She will perform for 18 minutes during the pre-game entertainment.
“And I’m just so happy to get this opportunity because I know you guys are doubling down and going bigger and bigger and making a huge splash with your sport, and I think this is really going to be an international moment for Australians and for footy in Australia,” Perry said on Thursday at the MCG.
“I’m just so happy to be a part of that new beginning. There’s been some incredible performers that have played before me. But I’m going to be bringing a larger than life show, this is a show bigger than I’ve done in Rio. I was just there with 100,000 people and the VMAs, because this is such a large venue.
“Australians like to sing along at the top of their lungs, especially after two or three beers and they are just so passionate about their sport and their community. Everyone likes to root for a team and it feels like it’s all fun and games and everyone is into this camaraderie and community.
“I’ll be performing with what I stand for: Love, light, empowerment, connection with feminine divine. I’m feeling very grounded, I feel like I’ve gone through quite a metamorphosis since becoming a mother … it’s the greatest decision I’ve ever made and it will be a true speccy.”
Perry said she wasn’t going for either Sydney or Brisbane with the singer presented a Swans jumper and a mini Brisbane jumper for her daughter Daisy.
She has learnt a lot of footy lingo and couldn’t resist taking a dig at the absence of a Melbourne team.
“I’m Switzerland,” she said.
“What I’m still trying to get over is Melbourne has 10 teams and they’re not here. I am going to take the stage like a swan, I will expand, you will see my wing span but you will definitely hear me roar.
“And I was always going to play that song so you conspiracy theorists out there, geez, stretch before you reach.
“I will be singing I kissed a Girl with an Australian artist that you don’t know about.”
Perry, who just released a new album and announced an Australian tour next year, said she’s feeling the mum guilt being away but having performed at the MCG before for the Women’s World Cup, knew it was an opportunity she couldn’t pass up. She is expected to bring Aussie icon Tina Arena on stage to perform a song.
“It’s a tough you know, everyone feels a bit of that mum guilt especially when you’re away for a period of time, but when someone calls and says do you want to perform in front of 100,000 people, yeah I do,” Perry said.
“I am so grateful, it’ll be almost 10 years since I did something like this in the states, and to be able to do something like this again after so long, that doesn’t always happen for an artist, so I’m super stoked.”
She also said she ran one and a half laps of the ground yesterday to get the “blood going”.
Also presented at the MCG were Cody Simpson, who is singing the national anthem, and Christine Anu, her daughter Zipporah and Mike Brady, who are also performing.
