GINA Rileyand Jane Turnerare celebrating after an unlikely comeback for their classic comedy, Kath & Kim.
The very first episode of the show — which originally screened on the ABC back in 2002 — was a huge hit on Channel 9 on Tuesday night, despite being shown countless times before.
It leads to the question: will Kath & Kim, or Riley and Turner, return for a new series?
The last series appeared on Channel 7 in 2007.
Magda Szubanski, who plays Sharon Strzelecki in the series, said nothing was planned yet.
“Never say never, but there’s nothing in the immediate future, certainly,” she told Confidential.
“Sharon is Sharon and I love her, but I’ve always done a variety of roles. I love diversity and I love doing different things.”
Kath & Kim averaged 572,000 viewers across Australia and, to put it in perspective, the expensive production of Australian Survivor on Channel 10 averaged 600,000.
With regional figures added late today, Kath & Kim averaged 863,025 across the country.
The ladies from Fountain Lakes told Confidential they were happy to be back, and not surprised — naturally — that the re-run was a success.
“We are completely up ourselves about the ratings,” Kath said.
“Once again the Australian public have shown unpeckable taste.”
She confirmed all was good for both of the characters.
“Life at The Lakes is as frantic as ever,” she said.
“Kel’s on the toot, Kim’s on the couch and I’m nursing Sharon 24/7 who strained her clacks practising for Ninja Warrior.”
