Josh and Waleed’s breakfast date

It was a breakfast of champions when the federal Treasurer met with The Project host, but what did they discuss over scrambled eggs and avocado toast?

In Melbourne terms it is a power summit comparable with Davos or the United Nations — but with scrambled eggs, avocado toast and glasses of water.

But what were the nation’s Treasurer Josh Frydenberg and The Project host Waleed Aly meeting to discuss when they caught up recently in a cafe at the honourable minister’s Kooyong electorate?

Confidential happened upon the morning catch-up — just before Christmas — with Aly resplendent in a dark sports jacket and the Treasurer more “casual” in his gym gear. Apparently, the tennis-loving former banker had just done his exercise.

But there are no conspiracies here, so don’t expect Waleed to run for any Liberal seats soon.

Confidential understands the catch-up was simply an informal chat the pair pencilled in after getting to know each other after featuring on panels together.

Frydenberg is widely recognised around the corridors of power in Canberra for organising his own media, with many journos on hand to text.

With their busy diaries it’s not easy and the pair had been trying to schedule it since the election.

MORE CONFIDENTIAL

Of course, Aly is not averse to meals with Liberal honchos.

Four years ago, he and wife Susan Carland sat with then Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull at an Iftar dinner — a fast breaking meal enjoyed by Muslims during Ramadan — at Kirribilli House.
