AFL champion Jonathan Brown has attacked red-carpet trolls, labelling them as weak as p---.
A week out from footy’s most glamorous night, the Brownlow Medal, former Lions superstar Brown said WAGs should not be subjected to online abuse for simply standing in support of their partners at the event.
“The faceless, nameless trolls ... they’re weak as p---,” Brown told Confidential.
“I spend no time thinking about them.
“But the girls take it hard because they’re not used to the feedback.
“Footballers get strong feedback from over the fence when we’re playing, so us boys get a thick skin.
“The girls, because they’re not exposed to it, it’s bloody hurtful to them.”
This time last year, after being trolled by an anonymous critic, Brown’s wife, Kylie, called for an end to red-carpet bullies.
“There are ways of critiquing without attacking a woman’s face, or weight, or saying things like ‘eat a burger’. We need to get a hold of this problem,” Kylie said.
Brown added: “The Brownlow is difficult for some wives and girlfriends.
“The girls enjoy getting dressed up and they are made to feel more important than the blokes, which is really good, because of the perception, and reality, of being a WAG.
“Everybody talks about WAGs, and how they love this glamorous lifestyle when, in fact, they don’t. They might dress up once or twice a year, but the rest of time, they’re mums or working women.”
